XMP Files on Ingest Necessary?
« on: March 24, 2013, 03:00:55 PM »
Giving this whole Photo Mechanic thing a go. Come from the land of importing through Windows explorer and importing into Lightroom. Love the speed of culling through my images so far with PM.
Had a quick question as far as ingesting images. I shoot RAW and noticed that when I ingested the raw files it also wrote an XMP file. I know this is the sidecar file but not sure why it needs to be imported along with the raw file. From what I understand PM uses the embedded jpg for file previews which is why it is super fast. I just like the peace of mind while importing thousand of images from a wedding that both my main ingest folder and backup ingest folder match with the actual raw files instead of double the amount. Is there a way to shut off the creation of the XMP file on ingest or is this absolutely necessary?
Thanks for any clarification.

Regards,
Toby

Toby, I think you just need to change your IPTC/XMP preferences to not have PM “always create a sidecar”

Guess you changed the default setting here.

Hayo,
That did it. I found the XMP sidecar write that you mentioned.
Thanks a ton.
