updating PM and labels reverting
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:02:59 AM »
Is there a way to keep all the entered labels color and text when upgrading to a new PM version?
I had set it up with the colors and precise names to work and be compatible with lightroom but after upgrading I had to re set it up again.

That shouldn't happen.  PM's preferences are not part of the application.

How are you upgrading?  What OS are you running PM on?

Yeah basically the upgrading is the weird part since PM asked me if I wanted to download a newer available version which basically completely replaced the previous one.

That's perfectly fine.  Your preferences are stored in the following location:

<your home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.camerabits.PhotoMechanic/

They are not overwritten when you upgrade.  I suggest that you open that path in the Finder and check to see if your preferences files exist.

No.  You're in the wrong folder.

In the Finder, choose the Go to Folder... command from the Go menu.  Enter:

~/Library/Preferences/com.camerabits.PhotoMechanic

Amongst a number of files and folders you should see a file named "com.camerabits.PhotoMechanic.prefsdb" which is the main preferences file.  It contains your settings for each of the sections in the Preferences dialog.

Great.  Now set your color label preferences and then save them and then quit Photo Mechanic.  Go look at that file again, get its Info from the Finder (File->Get Info) and make note of the Modified date.  It should be very near to the current time of day (you should have just modified it.)

Feel free to backup that file.  If later you find that your color label preferences revert then you can restore your backup.  You can also make a snapshot of your color label preferences by using the "Lightning Bolt" button in the Color Class preferences in the General section of the Preferences dialog.  You can easily restore your color labels from your saved snapshot.
