I finally gave up waiting for the Camera Bits catalog program.

EDIT: [Removed comments regarding another application and its pricing.  We don't allow the advertising of other company's software applications.  Those that need a cataloging application can use Google or another search engine to find what's available and see if it is right for them.]

With all due respect the above policy regarding competitors is not in Camera Bit's interest. I am a long time PM user and will continue use and promote your product because it is excellent. I cannot understand why you would restrict discussion of competitor's products. The more open you are with respect to the competition and the more compatible PM is with other products the more likely customers are to use your product. The fact that PM plays well with other software is a strong selling point for PM - in fact it is in your interest to make sure PM plays well with competitor's products because you will sell more of your product. And the more widely know it is that PM works with other DAM products the more likely it is that new users will try PM and adopt it for future use. Your strongest marketing point is to get your name and reputation spread far and wide. One way to do that is to encourage all photographers, including those who use competitor's software, to gather here and talk about software. Camera Bits gets the benefit of that powerful exposure for free. Restricting discussion is the best way to make sure that does not happen. Locking out legitimate conversation makes you look weak. And just because I or other PM users use Lightroom, ACDSee or any other DAM software in the meantime does not mean I will not switch to Camera Bits' catalog program when it is released.

William,

To my knowledge, we are free to discuss other products and have done so many times in the past. I can, however, understand that this discussing is ended when it is (close to) an advertisement. Not sure what triggered this to happen for your post (haven't seen your original text), but I think it was pricing information that was what did it.

Anyway, you're absolutely right in saying that one of the strong points of PM is its ability to cooperate with others. They have already gone great lengths to be compatible with the major players, and I'm sure they will continue doing so in the future.

I too am waiting for PM's DAM solution, but then more from the perspective of looking forward to what it could bring me in my workflow (which I'm sure will be improved lots by it), not because I absolulutely need it at the moment.

Cheers,
Hayo

I don't understand Camera Bits' comment about advertising or pricing. I wasn't advertising, I have zero affiliation with the vendor I mentioned except as a recent and probably temporary user. I mentioned the price because it might be of interest to other folks looking for a reasonably inexpensive temporary DAM solution. I believe Camera Bits new restrictive policy is wrong and self destructive. Why prevent customers who gather here from helping each other. Like you Hayo I have seen lots of discussion before about other products and had no idea my post would be considered some kind of violation and removed. In fact I think the action taken was in poor taste, especially given the extremely long wait we have endured hoping to see PM' DAM solution.
