Any way to also save keywords as open meta?
« on: May 11, 2015, 12:59:51 PM »
I am trying out PM for life post-Aperture in a Mac environment and it would be helpful if the IPTC keywords could also be saved as open meta tags. I don't know much about them but I do know they are searchable in spotlight and I use them a lot for other non-photo things. Is there any way to do this?
Thanks.

Could you explain more about what "open meta tags" are?  Is it a standard that is defined somewhere?  If so, where can I read more about them?

Here are a few links on OpenMeta and tagging. I know it more by experience than explanation and don't really know where to refer you for that. It's a great way to avoid using an everything bucket to organize and search all kinds of files. Thanks for the help.

Photo Mechanic does not support writing keywords as tags to the "xattrs" (extended attributes) of a file.  It does support writing keywords to the metadata contained within the image itself or into an XMP sidecar file.  Writing keywords to the extended attributes of a file is not likely something we will support.

Spotlight can show search results on keywords contained in JPEGs captioned by Photo Mechanic.  Photo Mechanic's Search function uses Spotlight to perform the searches.  Spotlight does not index XMP sidecar files properly (it indexes the data as one big blob and moreover does not associate the XMP sidecar file with the RAW file it belongs to.)
