No images :-(
« on: October 29, 2021, 04:43:15 AM »
Mac Pro 10.14.6

I opened the most recent 'missing' file in the sync folder in collections and that showed 47,499 files. I selected all and chose  'remove from catalog'. After an hour I saw no change. I needed to use the catalog so I quit and restarted to carry on with my work. At the end of the day I opened that same 'missing' collection and was pleased to see that it now showed 46,274 files so it seemed only to be a very slow process. I selected all in that collection, checked that the number shown was as expected (there are >200k files in all) and again chose 'remove from catalog'. I left that running and left the office.

This morning when I opened the catalog it showed 0 images. I quit and restarted PM but still saw no files in any search. The collections tab took a long time to show any collections but they did show up after a few minutes. However clicking the individual collections doesn't show any pictures. In the Catalog Management dialog the catalog is shown as having 240,625 documents which seems about right but a search for "" finds nothing and the search terms aren't showing in the contact sheet.

I ran the 'Optimize SQL Query Planning' to no effect. I then tried the Reintegration. It shows 'in progress', after 30 minutes it's still showing 0% so I quit and restarted but nothing has changed except that now I see no collections at all. Clicking 'Create' doesn't produce a new collection.

I have older backups from the last few days but I'm nervous about just dragging old copies of files into the PM folder.

15 minutes after I wrote the above the collections have reappeared and the 'missing' collection now shows 23,600 files but nothing else has changed.

I'm now running a quick sync and it seems to be adding *all* the files to the catalog but I don't think this will include the metadata. If I do end up with my files restored will I need to do a full sync? This takes a day or two!

Apologies - one more update: the quick sync ran straight through and shows that it had added >211k files (seems about right) but the collections, while showing the number of images, does not actually show them when clicked. The search still does nothing.

Your thoughts & suggestions appreciated!

Thanks
David

A bit more info - I have a small (47 files) test catalog. That seems to be working perfectly.

David,

I'd like to see your Photo Mechanic Plus log.  In Photo Mechanic Plus go to the Help menu and choose "Reveal Support Data..." and moments later a Finder window will come forward with the zipped log file selected.  Use the 'Attachments and other options' link when you're composing your reply to this message and there you'll be able to upload your zipped PM log file.

Note: I am out of the office until Tuesday.  I will be unable to look at your log file until then.  I suggest making a copy of your current catalog and set it aside for later investigation and restore one of your backups so you can continue.

Thanks,

-Kirk

Log attached.

PM is also taking a long time to quit, I get a dialog asking if I want to wait or quit. I try waiting but have to quit as it seems to go on indefinitely.

David,

Log attached.

Thank you for the log file.  Something has definitely gone awry.  Would it be possible for you to share your catalog.pmdb file of your "All pics" catalog, both the current one giving you trouble, and the backup version?

Thanks,

-Kirk

Certainly. Send me the FTP?

I'm not sure when the backup was made - it may be a copy of the dead one so I'll send you an older one from a week or so back.

Hi Kirk

Is there any progress in finding a solution for this. I'm currently without a database and wondering if I need to delete it all and start again or shift back to Media Pro until there's a fix.

Still investigating.  Rather than start over, you could restore one of your backups and continue.

Long story but I have it running.I'll 'sent details s tomorrow. I'll need to delete the missing files and that's what I did when it died last time. Is there  some logging that you'd like me to turn on first?

Only CATALOG_DEBUG_LOGGING, but based on your last logs, it was on.  But you may as well check it again.

David,

I noticed in your catalog that you have a large number of Catalog Sync collections.  I suggest removing them when you're done with them.  I don't think this contributed to the problem you experienced, but they will keep piling up and making your database larger.

David,

I'm able to open your catalog and perform searches, browse the metadata tree, look at collections, etc.  None of the images show up because I don't have the originals or proxies, but I can click on the 'i' button to view the Metadata Info.

I compared the backup and the current pmdb files and they're quite similar and I'm not seeing anything wrong with either of them.

David,

The log you posted earlier is indicating that one of the background processes (pm-task) may have crashed or was terminated.  I think that's why it stopped responding to searches and wouldn't open collections.  If this happens again, bring up the Activity Monitor and type: pm-task into the search field in the toolbar of the Activity Monitor window and see that there are four pm-tasks available.
