Collections from all Catalogs
« on: April 28, 2022, 10:08:33 PM »
Hi, I've scanned all my photo archive by year to single catalogs by year (otherwise it will take two weeks to reindex). I've used a filter to search e.g. all fireworks in 10 years which appear in the IPTC headline.
How to make a collection e.g. fireworks for all? I only see the option to save a collection for a single catalogs, not in general for all. I've also used the search tool. I can make snapshots, which are called smart collections in most other Digital Asset Management software. If I'm not wrong these snapshots are only hidden in the menus? There is no snapshot / smart collection?

How to save all found pictures, by filter, or search pictures, in one general collection?

Collections are per-catalog.  There are no collections that span multiple catalogs.

No, that feature does not yet exist.

It's not possible at this time.

Hi Kirk,
I really appreciate your fast honest answers. That makes me quite confident to use PM+ in the future.

Often I thought I just missed something, because I’m new to Photo Mechanic and still testing it (2 more days). I have bombed the forum already with a lots of feature requests and hope some will be included in the next major update. But so far I'm not so happy compared what I can achieve with my abandoned Media Pro. For now, I guess I will purchase only a normal license for PM without + and upgrade later if possible…

So once again, my feature wish list;-)

Independent / General Collections
Smart Collections / Albums
Structured Locations aka Place Finder
Filter/Browse and Panel: Structured Persons
Filter/Browse: Job ID
Filter/Browse: Categories
Filter/Browse: Supplememtal Categories
Metadata Templates Panel + GPS data
List View for any IPTC / EXIF Metadata
Very important: Annotations on Offline Media

I'm not familiar with this field at all.  Was this something that was specific to Media Pro?

Filter/Browse: Categories
Filter/Browse: Supplememtal Categories

These two fields (well, supplemental categories are three fields, so five fields in total) are deprecated by the IPTC organization so it is unlikely we'd ever index them.  They really should be used anymore.

Job ID is the same as Transmission Reference {transref}, mentioned here http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=15003.msg73822#msg73822

thanks michael. it's sometimes a little bit confusing from software to software.
I've made already a personalised exel sheet witz my details.

here is the original from the IPTC.org incl. Photo Mechanic

@ Kirk,
I know the Categories / Supplememtal Categories fields are outdated, as said at the IPTC.org,
but still exists in them most software. Because custom fields are not supported in all software, I use these old ones for some extra infos e.g. photo genres, to structure my jobs a little bit more. eg. commercial, editorial, etc.

The Job ID / Transmission Reference field, I use for, well jobs;-) With the Job ID I can mimic (software independent) collections and albums. That's why I miss them in Photo Mechanic +
