RAW renderer not performing as expected
« on: August 16, 2022, 11:32:05 AM »
I have recently switched from LR to DxO PL 5 and have started to use PhotoMechanic as a DAM.

According to the documentation here (https://docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48000361383-rendering-raw-previews-on-photo-mechanic-with-adobe-dng-converter), here (https://docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48001146201-render-cache-preferences) and the supported RAW file type listed here (https://docs.camerabits.com/support/solutions/articles/48000361354-supported-file-formats-in-photo-mechanic-6) I have set up the system like this;

See attached image 1-2

There is a forum post I found when investigating here (http://forums.camerabits.com/index.php?topic=13198.0) so I understand why the built-in option is not available though I would expect it to work with the Adobe DNG converter?

What I see is (see the brown category);

See attached image 2-2

The finalised TIFF rendered correctly (which doesn’t use the RAW renderer) and the corresponding DNG with edits not being shown. The B&W thumbnails are because I shoot with a B&W profile in-camera which is only applied to the embedded JPEG - they render fine in PL.

Have I misunderstood the feature (I would expect both the pictures to look pretty much the same in the contact sheet) or is there a version/ hardware/ software incompatibility somewhere?

  • Camera - Leica CL Firmware 4.1
  • PC - Apple MacBook Air (M1, 2020) 16GB
  • OS - Mac OS Monterey 12.5
  • Photo Mechanic Plus version 6.0.0.0 build 6496
  • Adobe DNG Converter 14.4.0.1121
  • DxO PhotoLab 5.4.0 build 72 Elite

I have generated and attached a log package if it provides any insight.

Many thanks

Just to clarify, you are saying that the RAW edits to L1010574.DNG were done by DxO's software, is that correct?

If so, then I think you might be misunderstanding the feature, as Adobe's DNG converter only knows what to do with the adjustments made by Adobe's software, it would ignore adjustments made by DxO's RAW processor.

How did those DNG files on the contact sheet get created? Are they straight out of a camera or were they created from another RAW format using some software? When you took the screenshot that you posted, was "Enable RAW Rendering" set to on?

Yes

Thank you, I understand now

SOOC - the Leica file extension is DNG but they are original RAW files (supported in PhotoMechanic)
