I am also having the same problem with PM 4.6.5: Folders with 200-300 image pairs (jpg+nef on local folder) do open extremely slowly (up to 30 sec) on my desktop PC (3 GB RAM, Win XP Pro, PM Cache settings like suggested).
My Antivirus software is AntiVir Premium.
I also use PM on an eeePC, again with AntiVir. Time to open same folder as mentioned above, but from external harddisk, is same as on desktop PC, despite much lower performance of eeePC.
Is a fix already available?

Kind regards
Holger Schulz

I have changed now back to 4.6.4 on my desktop PC. Contact sheets now start immediately rendering thumbnails when opening. To me it seems there is one major difference in behaviour between 4.6.4 and 4.6.5: While 4.6.5 waits until all thumbs have been rendered before opening the contact sheet (which then pops up with all thumbs being complete), 4.6.4 opens an empty contact sheet immediately and then renders the thumbs to fill the contact sheet (appr. 10-15 thumbs per second, as I scroll down). The behaviour of 4.6.4 therefore appears much more responsive to me.

No, we're getting ready for a new update release (beta).  Should be very soon.  Performance is even better than 4.6.4, especially on slow loading images like TIFFs and PSDs.  JPEGs and RAWs load at the same speed.  Initial opening of contact sheets is improved, especially on Network drives.

Thanks for following up and trying the beta.  We find that the more people who will try the betas and put it through its paces the better final release we all get to use.

I have the same issue on my Mac Pro with OS 10.6.4 with both PM 4.5.6 and the 4.6.6 beta.
When I revert back to 4.6.4 there's no problems at all.

On my MacBook Pro I'm running PM 4.5.6 with no problems at all, which leads me to believe it has something to do with the graphics card in my Mac Pro.
It's a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT.

Thanks
Peter

It must be a different issue then.  The issue that started this thread is a Windows-only issue.

Perhaps you could describe your MacPro issue in detail?  (And I'm guessing you mean 4.6.5 instead of 4.5.6 since there never was a 4.5.6 version in the 4.5.x series.)

I installed the PM 4.6.6 beta on my Win Vista 64 machine with 8GB ram and it solved the slow loading problem for me.

The 4.6.6.beta ist working fine for me but will expire on 29 September. I bought PM on 8 Sep 2009. Do I have to buy an update to carry on using 4.6.6.? If yes, where can I buy the update?
Thanks
Holger

Kirk,

Of course I mean 4.6.5, sorry about that...
When I open 4.6.5 or 4.6.6 it starts to display the thumbs but then it stalls and becomes completely unresponsive.
I can open some thumbs but they don't render and if I try to quit the program it takes forever to shut down and just gives me the spinning wheel.

In 4.6.4 I have none of those issues..

That would definitely be a different issue than what the original poster wrote about.

What kind of files are in the folder you're browsing?
How many files are in the folder you're browsing?

Would you be willing to run a logging version of Photo Mechanic so we can get to the bottom of this new issue?
