PM Quick Search
« on: May 12, 2014, 03:37:42 AM »
I have discovered a strange phenomenon in Photo Mechanic Quick Search (Mac 5.0 build 15451).

When I use Quick Search to search for images with a text string, sometimes PM shows only the JPEG copy in the search results, and sometimes both RAW original along with the JPEG copy. (see screenshot #1). This is despite the fact that both RAW and JPEG are tagged together in PM. The option to "Combine RAW+JPEG into single thumbnail" is checked in the Contact Sheet preferences pane.

When I look at the photos metadata via Adobe Bridge, I can clearly see that they both contain the very same metadata information.  (see screenshot #2)

Photo Mechanic WRITE the information correct for both RAW and JPEG, but does not seem to READ the information correctly. The misbehavior occurs only for some images, although they are all taken at the same time with just a few minutes apart and treated in exactly the same way.

I have also attached my PM IPTC/XMP Preferences tab (see screenshot #3).

What could be wrong?

P.S. This is not the case in PM Find (CMD+F on Mac)

PM uses Apple's Spotlight for the Search functions.  PM is showing you the results from the query you made.  Spotlight does not index XMP metadata on a field by field basis (it treats XMP as a simple text file) nor does it associate XMP sidecar file data with RAW files.

Is is possible that the data you're searching for is found in Exif data?

Thanks for the quick reply.

To answer your follow up question: no, the text string I'm searching for "Mattias" is a persons name only present in the IPTC/XMP field Caption/Description. The odd thing is that it occurs both in JPEG and RAW, but Spotlight only manage to find it in the JPEG for some images, but in both RAW and JPEG for others. See my search result in attachment 1.

I interpret your answer as it is Spotlight that doesn't work as it should, and it has nothing to do with PM.

That is correct.  If you want to send me a set of images that reproduces the problem, I can look into it further and give you a definitive answer.
